Overview

We were pleased to receive a total of 237 complete unique submissions, gathered between 24th June and 23rd August 2002.

You can see from Tables 1, 2 and 3 that there is a nice diversity of responses.

Survey Responses by Organisation Type

Looking at Table 1, as expected, National and International NGOs together account for around half of all submissions, although Community Based Organisations alone contributed almost one-fifth, whilst Academic Institutions are also well represented.

With only one response from a Bi-lateral Agency this category has been included in 'Other', along with private companies, students and private individuals.

Survey Responses by Region

Referring to Table 2, the number of submissions from each of seven stated regions of the World is relatively even. North America and Western Europe together account for approaching one-half of all responses, but the fact that Africa and Asia/Middle East combined account for one- third of submissions indicates that the survey has been successful in attracting an international sample.

Comparing the wealthier global North (Australasia/Japan, North America and Western Europe) with the poorer global South and East (Africa, Asia/Middle East, Eastern Europe/ Commonwealth of Independent States and Latin America/ Caribbean) we see that the split is practically fifty-fifty.

Survey Responses by Method of Website Production

Looking at Table 3 we see that almost half of all respondents either employ a professional web-developer in- house or delegate the responsibility to their existing staff (who subsequently use a proprietary software package).

The third largest category of submissions, namely, Other includes respondents without an existing website, or respondents whose sites are produced by volunteers in an unknown manner.

Under one-fifth of respondents use some form of CMS, whilst just under one-tenth are currently using a Free Software CMS; the three most common mentioned being Pagetool, Postnuke and eZpublish.
